# Remote conferencing

Remote conferencing is saving travel costs in energy and carbon output, but it is not always efficient and available in good quality. The video presentations also have usually low resolution in showing interactive drawings by the speaker. One of the interesting alternative ways of remote conferencing is by transmitting the trace of the pen trace synchronized together with audio, this is especially good for people like mathematicians. Whiteboards sometimes work well, but are hard to record synchronically with sound, for most of them there is no software available or free to do it. Recording of the conferences available online are poor quality and files big, while with such technologies if developed well could become good quality with less size: the drawing is 1-d. I do not need to see the face of the speaker in good resolution or sometimes at all, but I need to see what he draws on the board precisely and in good focus. I created a page Remote conferencing which should collect thoughts on efficient conferencing and alternative live lecture recording (than taking an inefficient 3d-camera), see also the MathOverflow discussion and the Australian survey listed in the literature list there. I had similar thoughts in nForum today.

By sheer coincidence I ran into Ruchira S. Datta on Google+, a computational biologist in Berkeley who happened to have helped write this paper:

I'll add this to Remote conferencing. I want to really push for remote conferencing in math and physics (and other fields, but those are the ones where people may listen to me)...

Darn, the Wiki is down again! Please, someone, add the above reference and link to Remote conferencing, or remind me to do it.

As a matter of fact my husband Tim Hoffmann is currently developping a board software. He is doing this in his free time but since he has currently 11 lecture hours/week you can imagine how much time is left for that - on the other hand since he sees his family only weekends this hobby gets a bit more of his attention than with a normal life.
